Project Historic building, Northamptonshire
Roof area 500m2
Substrate Lead
Product Kemperol V210 (Light Grey)
Requirement

The parapets and flat roofed area on this historic building had a traditional covering of code 7 lead sheet over timber boards. The old roof had started to deteriorate and was failing in a number of areas, particularly at the roll joints and junctions, with some indications of corrosion on the underside. Repair was necessary, however fire safety concerns meant traditional patch repairs, which require heat, was not an option. The cost of lead was also a factor, having tripled in cost over the previous 12 months.

Solution

Kemperol V210 waterproofing is available in both Light and Dark Grey colours, which provide a good simulation for new and weathered lead respectively. It bonds directly to the existing lead substrate, avoiding the need for removal, which can also damage the otherwise sound underlying joinery. Being highly elastic, the Kemperol membrane not only completely waterproofed the roof, including difficult details, but was able to withstand thermal movement caused by repeated warming and cooling of the lead and would easily withstand maintenance foot traffic.

Because Kemperol also bonds to brickwork, the soakers and flashings were neatly encapsulated to give complete integrity to the roof covering. Kemperol not only saved on material and labour costs but was completed in a fraction of the time normally needed for this type of repair.
