- Requirement
This medical centre in Fort William was in an area of high exposure and driving rain and the existing standing seam copper roof had started to fail at the seams, typically the most vulnerable details on this type of roof. Whilst an urgent and cost-effective repair was sought, the aesthetic qualities of the copper roof were important to the appearance of this relatively new building, and a solution was sought that would enable the patina of weathered copper to be maintained whilst securing a long term solution to the failure.
- Solution
Due to the nature of the failure, the most cost-effective long term solution was to encapsulate the existing roof, however it was also necessary to preserve the appearance, including the characteristic subtlety of the standing seams. Following consultation, Kemperol V210(M) was proposed together with the fast-curing Kemperol R primer as this could not only be supplied in a colour to match the weathered copper, but it was possible to apply the fleece tightly over the existing seams to maintain their shape and appearance. By forming a seamless membrane, bonded permanently to the existing copper, the leaking roof was repaired whilst retaining the outward appearance. The combined tensile strength and elongation properties of the Kemperol system also meant that any thermal or structural movement will be accommodated and the waterproof integrity of the roof assured despite the extremes of wind-driven rain.
